The state of Washington has officially sanctioned Girls Flag Football as a varsity sport, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced this week. What began as a club initiative supported by the Seattle Seahawks will now be formally governed and operated under the WIAA.
Following a two-year amendment process, the measure passed with the required 60% majority vote to become state policy. Flag football becomes the first new sport sanctioned by the WIAA in the 21st century, marking a major milestone for girls athletics in Washington.
With this decision, Washington joins 15 states nationwide that now recognize girls flag football as an official high school sport under their governing associations. As the fastest-growing sport for young women, the movement continues to gain momentum across the country.
