NAIA Leads the Way in Collegiate Varsity Flag Football Growth

Published

The NAIA is currently at the forefront of collegiate flag football expansion, boasting 22 active varsity programs-more than any other governing body. Additionally, 16 other NAIA institutions have announced plans to launch varsity teams in the near future, underscoring the association's leadership in advancing the sport at the varsity level.

In NCAA Division I, most programs still compete at the club level. Alabama State University remains the only Division I school with an active varsity flag football team. A small number of other institutions, including Mercyhurst University, have announced future plans to transition to varsity programs.

NCAA Division II reflects a similar landscape, with the majority of schools participating in club-level play while a growing number of institutions are beginning to announce their intentions to introduce varsity teams.

At the junior college level, flag football is also gaining momentum. Eight schools currently offer varsity programs, while an additional 11 have formally announced plans to establish varsity teams.

This steady growth across all classifications highlights the increasing popularity and institutional support for women's flag football at the collegiate level.
